<나이저 강 유역 유전> (Oil Rich Niger Delta)

 나이지리아 라고스에서 태어난 사진작가 조지 오소디(George Osodi)는 그가 ‘낙원의 강간(The Rape of Paradise)’으로 새로 명명한 자신의 조국을 20년 넘게 촬영해 왔다. 특히 오고닐랜드의 땅과 하늘을 더럽혀온 유정 화재와 대기를 뒤덮은 칠흑 같은 연기 구름을 추적하는데 공을 들였다. 강간당한 낙원의 기원은 로얄더치 쉘 석유회사(Royal Dutch Shell oil corporation)가 니제르 델타 지역의 석유 탐사를 지원하기 시작했던 때다. 식민 지배가 막 끝난 1956년경이다. 쉘사(Shell)에 의해 1958년부터 석유 추출이 시작됐고, 이를 통해 쉘과 영국 왕실은 막대한 부를 축적할 수 있었다. 반면, 추출을 시작한 지 불과 15년 만에 오고닐랜드는 수천 건의 기름 유출 사고로 인해 재앙의 땅이 되었다. 기름유출사고로 인해 약 210만 배럴의 기름이 유출되었는데, 이는 전 세계 로열 더치 쉘 사의 기름 유출 총량의 40%에 해당하는 양이었다. 이로 인해 이 지역에서의 삶은 영구적으로 돌이킬 수 없는 환경적, 사회적 재앙과의 동거로 변모했다. 유출된 기름이 지역의 토양과 수질을 오염시켜, 전통적인 농사와 수산업이 불가능하게 되었다. 지하수와 농작물이 발암물질에 노출되어 지역 주민의 생명이 치명적인 위협에 노출되었다. 맑은 물과 음식, 공기를 마실 수 권리가 다국적 기업과 설득당한 지역 커뮤니티에 의해 박탈당했다. 

Oil Rich Niger Delta

Over the years I have documented fascinating beauty, struggle and genius in my homeland’s everyday life. Oil Rich Niger Delta is the uncompromising realities of the oil crisis which has enveloped large areas of his native country. At once beautiful and deeply disturbing, the image is emblematic of the powerful juxtapositions and saturated tones which characterise Ososdi’s body of work.

Nigeria’s Niger River, one of the largest sites for crude oil production in the world, is said to have suffered the equivalent of Alaska’s Exxon Valdez spill every year for the last 50 years since the beginning of oil exploration in the region. The sheer scale of this destruction is difficult to fathom, but its effects are felt and seen through its impact on the surrounding wetland ecosystem. Once associated with rich biodiversity, oil slicks have polluted waterways and made the surrounding land inhospitable. 

Crafting images that are simultaneously appealing, surprising and sometimes even shocking, I have always aimed to capture vibrant and sometimes mysterious forces shaping the socio-political landscape of our continent.
