Exhibition Theme

During the early 21st century, the Korean art circle has been driven to not only expand quantitatively through globalization but also to mature qualitatively. One way for modern art to become international is through photography. Photos extend beyond being a simple tool of reproduction and have become an independent art genre and an important medium that has significantly influenced and transformed art itself.

Focusing on this phenomenon, the 2nd Daegu Photo Biennale showcases the identity of the photo medium in modern art while revealing the status of photography as a new subject for art itself. Move forward, the biennale diachronically and synchronically sheds light on the photographic art of South Korea, China, and Japan, all of which play the role in Northeast Asia of grabbing the attention of to world to examine the present state of photographic art and predict its future. In particular, this biennale intensively features art that encapsulates the identity of Northeast Asia amid a variety of phenomena in the modern art circle that is increasingly globalized, revealing the historical meaning and current address of the selected photos as well as the creativity and experimental nature inherent in them.

Under the theme “The Memory of Tomorrow,” the 2nd Daegu Photo Biennale will dissect the temporal past -- a property of photos as a recorded trace and also refers to the lasting temporality continuous via the physical nature of photos at the same time. In fact, the medium of photography has two antinomic sides: it is a temporal art simultaneously involving the desire to fossilize the past to retain that fixed point in history forever. The medium of photography can express the temporality of the past, present, and future with more variety, establishing its stance more stable in terms of its variation and experimental nature thanks to the digitization of the image.

With these properties, photographic art occupies its own independent position in modern art with its unique realm of possibilities. Right in the center of the digitalization era, which encourages to close the gap between high art and the public, this biennale will become a big photographic art fair where the photographers can communicate and interact with the public on an easy and deep basis.
