여성을 위한 찬가, 2017

토니 검의 2017년 작 <여성을 위한 찬가>는 여성이 겪는 신체적 변화에 대한 시각적 서사이다. 코사(Xhosa)족의 전통에서 첫 월경을 시작하여 맨 가슴 위에 진흙(imbola)과 구슬 목걸이로 장식한 어린 소녀(intombi)가  여성(umfazi)에서 노파(umama omkhulu, ixhego) 가 되는 과정을 그린다. 

이 시리즈를 통해 작가는 코사족 소녀와 여성들에게 진정한 가정의 의미를 성찰한다. 작가를 두 팔을 벌려 환영하는 노인 옆에 앉아 작가는 딸이자, 손녀이자, 자매의 역할로 코사족의 여성을 대변한다. 코사족의 전통에 따르면 가슴을 드러내는 것은 젊은 여성들만이 할 수 있는 특권으로 일정 나이 이상의 여성들은 가슴을 가리는 전통 복장을 입는다. 

이러한 개인적이고 내밀한 특징들을 통해 작가는 서로 다른 삶의 이야기를 전달한다. 다양한 사람들이 ‘보통’이라고 이야기하는 것들을 탐구하면서 작가는 문화란 본질적으로 고유한 것이며 하나에 고정되지 않고 진화하는 과정임을 이야기한다. 

Ode to She, 2017

Tony's new work, Ode to She is an invitation to experience the narrative of transition and transformation; the journey in Xhosa tradition known as, 'intonjane' when, a young girl 'intombi', bare chested, adorned in traditional beads and 'imbola', a traditional natural clay, becomes a woman 'umfazi' and later, 'umama omkhulu' or 'ixhego' - old lady. In the foreground, each stage captures the extent to which women in particular, navigate multiple narratives. 

New series sees a return to 'home' to unearth what it really means to be a Xhosa girl and woman. To do this, she immerses herself in core 'rites of passage', she sits with elders who welcome Tony with open arms, celebrating her genuine interest as young daughter, granddaughter, sister, and female representative of Xhosa culture and people. 

Physiological practices like, exposure of the breasts among 'girls' - 'Amatombazana' a symbolic point of differentiation from 'abafazi' (women), 'umfazi' who will generally wear Xhosa attire from the bosom down. 

Offering a more intimate and personal intrigue. Here Tony recognizes, accepts and celebrates the contrasting dimensions and narratives of life. In this series, Gum portrays the extent to which culture ultimately evolves over time. Integrating the range of human norms, practices and experiences; culture is essentially a UID and non-static evolutionary process.
