<흐느끼는 물>

<흐느끼는 물>은 상어의 지느러미가 사냥감이 되면서부터 멸종 위기에 처해버린 상어의 실태에 관한 시각적 서사이다. 영상 속의 무용수는 상어가 우아한 움직임으로 평화롭게 살아가는 모습에서부터 밧줄에 뒤얽혀 생명을 위협받고 지느러미가 잘려 죽는 순간을 연기한다. 상어가 자유롭게 유영하는 모습과 고통으로 죽어가는 움직임을 표현하는데 2년이라는 연습 시간이 필요했다. 

지느러미가 잘려 고통과 몸부림 속에서 죽음에 이르게 되는 상어에 대한 신체적 표현은 인간의 탐욕을 채우기 위해 자행되는 폭력적 행위에 대한 암시를 내포한다. 상어의 지느러미는 500원에 팔리고 있다. 단지 500원에 고귀한 생명이 사라진다. 이미 전 세계 상어의 90%가 학살되었다. ‘흐느끼는 물’은 곧 상어의 눈물이자 바다의 눈물이다.   

Weeping Water

Weeping Water is a visual narrative unveiling the vulnerable status of sharks, which have become endangered due to shark finning. The dancer in the video portrays a shark that swims gracefully, lives in peace until it is trapped in a net, and dies painfully with its fins cut off. It took two years of practice to express the movements of a shark both in peace and agony. 

The dancer's physical expression mimics the shark that has its fins sliced off, struggles in pain, and eventually dies. This performance implies violence driven by human greed. The fin is sold at 500 won (which is equivalent to 50 cents). That is the monetary worth of precious life disappearing. Nearly 90 percent of the global shark population has been massacred already. Weeping Water is not only the tears of the sharks but also that of the sea.
