<상상의 사진관>

나는 버려진 사진, 정보의 가치가 상실된 사진 혹은 역사적 자료로 남겨진 사진 등을 작업의 오브제로 삼는다. <상상의 사진관>은 청일전쟁 이후 조선에 거주하는 일본인 사진가들이 찍은 조선인 사진을 서구의 도서관 등지에서 발견하게 된 것을 계기로 시작한 작업이다. 이국적인 모습으로 연출되어 관광 기념품으로 판매되었던 사진 이미지들이 서구 사회에서 조선의 이미지로 아카이브되어 남게 된 현상을 역설적으로 재현하고자 했다.

나는 이방인의 시선에 각인된 백여 년 전 선조들의 모습이 박제된 아카이브 자료로부터 떼어내 나의 스튜디오로 소환했다. 상상의 이미지를 찍어냈던 당대 사진관의 풍경을 시각적으로 재맥락화하여 자료화된 조선인의 이미지가 이국적인 낭만의 대상으로서 상상된 결과일 뿐임을 드러내고자 했다. 이러한 행위가 사진 이미지로 남겨진 과거의 존재에게 새로운 의미가 부여되기를 희망하면서 말이다.

Imaginary Studio

I took photographs that lost their informative value or remained only as historical documents as my objects for my project. Imaginary Studio was inspired by the photos I found in the libraries or other collections in western countries. The images were reflecting Koreans taken by Japanese photographers who resided in Joseon after the First Sino-Japanese War. I deliberately staged the original photos to make the subject appear more exotic to be sold as souvenirs for tourists. My goal was to demonstrate the irony of these images, now regarded as an archive of the West’s perception of the Joseon Dynasty.

I took the stereotypical images of my ancestors from some 100 years ago that are deeply rooted in the minds of foreigners, removed them from their archives, and brought them to my studio. I tried to recreate the studio to produce imaginary images of people in Joseon as the objects of exotic romanticism so that I could disclose the archival photos of Korean were the mere result of a romantic imagination of other countries. By doing so,  I hope to bring new justified meaning to the beings of the past only exist in the photos.
