우리가 모르는 경계

천혜의 경관과 에메랄드빛 바다를 자랑하는 동해는 온종일 보고 있어도 지루할 틈이 없을 만큼 아름답다. 하지만 이념의 충돌로 빚어진 각종 군사시설물이 자리하고 있었던 곳은 (해안선을 따라 설치된 군 초소와 철책 등) 보이지 않았던 얼룩진 역사의 파편들이 자본주의적 이데올로기를 내포한 풍경으로 변해가고 있다. 이름난 해변을 중심으로 철책이 걷어지고 군 초소가 철거되면서 각종 리조트와 위락시설이 들어선다. 하지만 이 시설물에는 일반인들은 쉽사리 알아볼 수 없도록 교묘하게 고안된 새로운 군사 경계용 장치들이 숨겨져 있다. 

이 지역은 또한 분단 이데올로기 아래 수많은 청춘이 군복무를 위해 일정한 기간 고립과 멈춤의 시간을 보내는 장소이기도 하다. 강제된 지시와 복종, 그 안에서 발생하는 비상식적인 불온한 일들, 민간인과의 충돌 등 고립된 공간 속에서의 비정상적이고 비상식적인 일들이 일어난다. 흔적만이 남은 이곳은 그들에게 평생 잊을 수 없는 아픈 기억으로 얼룩진 공간이며 오랫동안 애써 외면하거나 잊고 싶은 곳으로 남는다.

만약 그들이 그곳을 다시 찾는다면 어떻게 그 공간들을 바라볼까? 이념의 표상으로 자리 잡은 군사시설물은 과연 누구를 위한 것인가? 경계선에 머무는 시간이 길어질수록 경계의 풍경은 익숙해지고 경계에 관한 의식은 흐려져 간다. 

Unknown Boundary

Blessed with stunning seascapes and emerald-colored waters, East Sea is so beautiful that many would never get tired of watching it. Where was once a solemn legacy of the darkest chapter of the nation's history and ideological conflict is turning into a place dominated by capitalism. Military installations along the coast of well-known beaches, such as guard posts and barbed wires, are being replaced by resorts and entertainment facilities. However, the new establishments still contain carefully-designed military demarcation devices that are hardly recognizable to the untrained eye.

This is the place where many young people spend their time in isolation and experience a pause in life while serving in the military in a divided country. Full of absurdity and senselessness, such as irrational orders and obedience towards the orders, rebellious happenings, and conflicts between soldiers and civilians, was witnessed in the isolated place. 

All remains are the traces of the past, but for some, they are still a reminder of painful memories or something they want to forget.

What would they think of this place if they returned here? The military installations that have become the symbol of an ideological divide - who are they for? The longer you stayed at the border, the more you get used to its landscape, although the recognition about the border gets blurred.
