핵무기들

폴 샴브룸은 전례 없는 미군의 협력으로 1992년부터 2001년까지 미국 16개 주에 산재한 35개 군사기지를 방문하여 수십 장의 핵무기 및 기지 사진을 촬영했다. 샴브룸의 목표는 우리의 집단의식 속에 개념적으로만 강렬하게 존재하는 핵무기고의 실체를 드러내는 것이었다. 

샴브룸이 프로젝트에 착수한 이래로 4반세기가 흘렀으나 그가 촬영했던 핵무기의 대다수는 여전히 발사 준비 상태로 활성화되어 있다. 2018년 기준 원자 과학자들의 종말 시계는 자정 2분 전으로 1953년 이후 가장 위험한 시점이다. 이는 우리 스스로 제작한 위험한 기술에 의해 우리의 세계가 파괴되는 것을 경고하고 있다. 

샴브룸은 자신의 작업이 관객에게 핵 위협의 유산과 현재적 상황을 인지하고 현재와 미래를 향한 태도를 정립하는 데에 도움이 되기를 바라고 있다.

Nuclear weapons

With unprecedented cooperation from U.S. military authorities, Paul Shambroom made 35 visits to photograph more than two dozen weapons and command sites (plus hundreds of individual ICBM silos) in 16 states between 1992 and 2001. His goal was  to reveal the tangible reality of the huge nuclear arsenal, something that exists for most of us only as a powerful concept in our collective consciousness. 

25 years after beginning this project, almost every type of US weapon, submarine, missile and bomber that I photographed is still active and on thehighest level of alert (launch readiness), although in greatly reduced numbers. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock stands in 2018 at 2 minutes to midnight, its most perilous point since 1953. This design warns the public about how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies of our own making. He hopes his photographs will connect viewers to the legacy and current state of these threats, and help them to confront and define their own attitudes about the nuclear present and future.
