Grey American Landscape

나에게 사진은 지나간 시간의 표면적인 현상, 혹은 나에게 “기억”이 되어버린 형상과 삶이 중첩된 시각적 언어이다. 

일련의 작업은 세 번에 걸친 미국 횡단의 결과이다. 첫 번째는 미 서부에서 동부를 횡단하며 미군 부대와 주변 중소도시에 거주하는 미군 가족의 일상을 ‘기록’한 것이다. 그들이 군인이라는 것을 제외하면 내가 ‘담아낸’ 풍경은 미국 가족의 일상과 다르지 않았다. 그런데도 결과물에는 촬영 당시에 인지하지 못했던 폭력적 코드가 남아있었다. 두 번째 횡단에서 나는 대도시 풍경을 촬영했다. 첫 번째 횡단의 결과로 인식했던 일상에 내재한 이미지 코드와 그의 피상성, 그리고 나의 삶 사이의 관계성에 주목했다. 마지막 횡단 시에는 로버트 프랭크가 《미국인(The Americans)》을 촬영했던 곳에서 시간의 간극을 두고 프랭크가 찾지 않았던 일상의 파편들을 발견하고자 했다. 

나는 그곳에 있었고, 내가 지나온 장소에서 다른 누군가도 살아가고 있을 것이다. 

Grey American Landscape

For me, photography is a visual language in which the outward phenomenon of times has passed or shapes that have become my "memories" overlapped with life. The series of work is the result of my three cross-country trips in the U.S. The first is a "documentation" of the everyday lives of U.S. military families living in army bases and small cities nearby during my trip from West to East. Aside from the subject being military families, the images that I "captured" are just like those of any other ordinary American family. But they still contain elements of violence which I was unaware of during the shoot. For my second cross-country trip, I took photos of cityscapes of major cities, with an emphasis on visual symbols embedded in daily life, which I acknowledged after my first trip, and their superficiality, as well as their relationship with my life. The third and last trip was to the location where Robert Frank worked on The Americans. With a time lag, I explored fragments of everyday life in the area which went unnoticed by Frank. I was there, and others are living in the places where I have been.
