보이지 않는 도시들 (2015-2017)

도시의 풍경은 사실적인 동시에 내면적이며, 객관적인 동시에 초현실적이다. 나는 발터 벤야민이 강조했던 “광학적 무의식”의 관점에서 도시를 탐험하고 배회한다. 직업군인으로서 최전방 부대에서 5년간 복무했던 경험은 끊임없이 도시의 세부를 광학적으로 정찰하게 만든 요인이기도 하다. 

목적지 없이 도심을 배회하고 정찰하면서 느낀 불안은 내가 바라보는 풍경과 사물에 관한 의구심으로서 사진에 투영된다. 나의 시선이 머문 장소에는 급격한 근대화를 겪은 도시의 부산물과 잔여물이 기이한 모습으로 남겨져 있다. 이 잔여를 찾아 배회하고 사진을 찍는 행위는 나에게 있어서 도시의 다큐멘터리이자 퍼포먼스이다. 

이처럼 생소하고 의구심으로만 다가온 도시 이미지의 경험을 극대화하기 위해 나는 디지털 방식으로 비현실적인 색감을 가공하여 현실인지 가상인지 구분할 수 없는 혼란스러운 도시의 모습, 미성숙한 도시의 실체를 사진으로 나타내려 했다. 

One Wild Night (2015–2017) 

The urban landscape is realistic yet internal and objective yet surrealistic. I explore and wander around the city from the perspective of Walter Benjamin, who stressed an "optical unconsciousness." My experience in the frontline unit as a professional soldier for five years has enabled me to endlessly and thoroughly scout the details of the cities in an optical way. 

The anxiety I felt while wandering around and scouting out the downtown without a particular destination translates to a feeling of doubt towards the landscape and objects I saw in the picture. I found bizarre-looking by-products and residues from rapid urban modernization in the places that I saw with my eyes. To me, wandering around the city searching for such remnants and taking photographs of them is an urban documentary and performance. 

To maximize my experience with unfamiliar and doubtful images of the city, I added unrealistic colors which accentuated a confused and immature image of the city, blurring the lines between the real and virtual worlds.
