앤지의 첫번째 결혼

나인수는 주한 미군과 결혼하여 미국에 정착한 상미와 그의 딸 앤지(Angie), 앤지의 딸 미아(Mia)의 이야기를 다루는 <앤지의 첫 번째 결혼>을 통해 여성의 삶을 둘러싼 일상의 폭력성에 관한 시각적 서사를 전개한다. 

사우스캐롤라이나 록힐(Rock Hill)에 사는 상미의 딸 앤지는 친부가 다른 아들 알렉스와 딸 미아를 키우는 미혼모였다. 앤지는 새 남자친구와 결혼했지만 이내 백혈병에 걸려 2013년 11월 세상을 떠난다. 앤지의 보험금은 남편이 수령했고, 미아의 친부는 아이를 데리고 갔다. 양육권 다툼이 상미와 미아 친부 사이에서 발생했다. 2014년 3월 21일, 미아의 친할아버지 그레고리(Ronald Gregory)는 미아에게 9mm 구경 권총의 방아쇠를 당겼다. 미아는 피를 흘리는 동안 “할아버지, 나의 이 고통은 언제 끝나게 될까요?”라는 마지막 말은 남긴 것으로 언론에 보도되었다.

  상미는 미국 남자와의 결혼을 원했다. 앤지는 결혼을 원했다. 그렇다면 미아가 원한 것은 무엇이었을까? 

Angie’s First Marriage

Insoo Rah visually narrates everyday violence in women’s lives of in Angie's First Marriage as he follows the story of Sangmi, a Korean woman who married an American soldier stationed in Korea and moved to the US, her daughter Angie and granddaughter Mia.

Angie was a single mom in Rock Hill, South Carolina, raising her son Alex and daughter Mia who had a different father. Angie married her new boyfriend but died in November 2013 from leukemia. Her new husband collected insurance money after her death, and Mia was sent to her biological father. Sangmi and Mia's father started a court battle over the custody of Mia. On March 21, 2014, Mia's paternal grandfather Ronald Gregory shot her with a 9-millimeter pistol and watching his dying granddaughter as she said, "When am I going to stop hurting?" according to local media reports. Sangmi wanted a marriage with an American man. Angie wanted a marriage. Then, what did Mia want?
