뷰티 리커버리 룸

<뷰티 리커버리 룸>은 외모로 여성을 평가하는 문화적 현상으로 인해 야기된 성형 의료산업의 실태와 인식에 관한 사진적 질문이다. 

2010년 국제미용성형학회(ISAPS)는 1인당 성형수술 지출이 가장 높은 나라로 한국을 지목했다. 오랫동안 남성 중심의 시각성을 반영했던 미디어 환경은 여성들의 외적 미에 관한 욕망의 기준을 생산했으며, 성형 의료산업의 급성장이라는 기묘한 부산물을 양산하기에 이르렀다. 이제 마취제를 맞고 피부를 절개하는 과정이나, 그로 인해 생기는 멍과 심한 흉터를 회복하기 위해 감내하는 시간은 위협적이기보다는 외적인 미의 기준에 부합하기 위해 감내해야 하는 시간으로 인식되고 있다. 

<성형회복실>에 남겨진 여성의 이미지는 이러한 시간의 흔적을 통해 우리의 문화적 현상과 인식 체계를 가리키고 있다. 

Beauty Recovery Room

Beauty Recovery Room is a photographic question about the reality of the plastic surgery industry caused by a cultural phenomenon evaluating women’s appearance . 

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2010, confirms that South Korea is indeed the country with the world’s highest per capita rate of cosmetic plastic surgery. The male-dominated media endlessly reinforces its model of the ideal woman. Korean women often fall into the trap of trying to live up to an ideal personified in the media. The combination of these factors has dramatically increased the burgeoning plastic surgery industry while creating another set of standards for women to adhere to. Enduring general anesthetic, cuts, bruises, and often intense scarring all for the sake of vanity is no longer considered risky or extravagant behaviour; quite the reverse, it has become commonplace.
