모순된 아름다움

콜렛 베시-쿨로는 사회경제학 기반의 인종, 계급, 교육 및 정체성과 관련된 주제를 다루면서 개인이 자신의 존재를 정당화시키고 합리화할 수 있는가를 질문한다. 특히 자아와 타자 사이의 교차점에 중점을 두고 있으며, 사회적으로 낙후되고 소외된 개인과 커뮤니티 간 사회적·창의적 연대의 협업 과정에 관심을 두고 있다. 이에 기반하여 베시-쿨로는 지금까지 Communities in Schools (도움이 필요한 아이들이 학교를 그만두지 않고 학업을 지속할 수 있도록 돕는 비영리단체), Project Row Houses(예술을 통해 문화 정체성을 기르는 단체), Art on Purpose, 901 Arts(유소년에게 미술 및 음악 활동을 지원하는 단체) 및 Art Source South Africa(남아프리카 공화국의 시각예술 컨설팅 단체) 등과 협력하면서 프로젝트를 진행해 왔다.

<모순된 아름다움> 연작은 남아프리카공화국 케이프타운에서 확인할 수 있는 경제적으로 소외된 유소년 문제를 다룬 작업이다.

Contradicting Beauties

Colette Veasey-Cullors is an artist and photographer whose artwork throughout her career has continually investigated themes pertaining to socio-economics, race, class, education and identity. She seeks to question our personal connections to these subjects and how one might justify and rationalize their existence to themselves and others. She is interested in decoding these issues by employing the use of metaphor and investigating the point of intersection between these dichotomies.  

Colette’s collaborative interest resides in the process of social and creative engagement with individuals and communities, with a particular interest in underinvested and underrepresented communities. She has worked with a number of community-based organizations, including Communities in Schools, Project Row Houses, Art on Purpose, 901 Arts and Art Source South Africa. The series Contradicting Beauties investigates these issues as they pertain to Cape Town, South Africa.
