불키저 (알바니아를 구성하는 36개의 현 중 하나) 

불키저는 알바니아 북동부의 광업으로 이름 난 작은 마을이다. 1939년 크롬이 처음 발견되고, 1948년에 해당 광물을 채굴하기 위한 광산이 생긴 후 불키저는 전 세계에서 세 번째로 큰 크롬 생산지가 되었다. 2013년 처음 불키저를 방문하였을 때, 나는 마치 과거로 소환되어 어린 시절 기억 속에 남아있는 알바니아의 모습을 목격하는 것만 같았다. 마을의 윤곽을 그리는 중심 도로를 따라 지어진 회색 건물들은 지난 시간 속에 멈춰져 버린 듯했다. 

3년 동안 나는 과거에 고정된 것처럼 보이지만 멈출 수 없고, 한계를 모르는 자본주의란 착취의 논리에 의해 미래로 달려가고 있는, 알바니아의 이야기를 전하려고 노력하였다. 나는 자원과 정신이 끊임없이 고갈되는 "황금 산"에 앉아있는 마을의 이야기를 전하고자 한다. 사람들은 불키저를 사회적 빈민가로 정의하기도 있지만, 그곳은 내가 포착하고자 한 오늘날의 문화적 원형을 표상한다. 

Bulqizë

Bulqizë is a small town in North-East Albania known as the town of the miners. Following the discovery of chrome there in 1939 and the opening of the first mines in 1948, Bulqizë has now become the world’s third largest producer of this mineral. The first time I went to Bulqizë was in 2013. A first encounter that took me back in time. The grey buildings of the main street outlined a town which had stopped in time, crystalized in the atmosphere of the Albania of my childhood.  So for the past three years I have been trying to tell the story of this slice of Albania which seems to be transfixed in the past and yet catapulted into the future by the unstoppable logic of exploitative capitalism which knows no bounds. Through my photos I tell the story of a community sitting upon a “mountain of gold” which sees its resources and minds ceaselessly draining away. Bulqizë has been defined by some as a social ghetto. To me it represents a reservoir of cultural archetypes which I have endeavored to capture.
