Symptom XX 

완전무결한 시각이란 가능한 것일까? 상상할 수 있기는 한가? 사진의 재현은 항상 보이지 않는 것과 결함과 불안정한 속성을 포함한다. 사진은 반드시 결함의 존재로 드러나는 비정상적인 지대, 실패, 사각지대를 함께 지니고 있다. 이런 불량한 부분들이 새로운 시각의 창출에서 오히려 중요한 역할을 한다. 그것들은 재현을 교란하지만, 눈으로 볼 수 없었던 새로운 시각성(visuality)을 창조한다. 이렇듯, 사진은 감춰졌던 것들에 대한 새로운 시선과의 탐색을 돕는다. (그런 의미에서) 사진 이미지는 본질적이지만 눈에 보이지 않는 존재의 병리적인 특성을 환기한다. 실패한 사진은 환경의 무질서에서 비롯된 다른 시각적 장애를 발하도록 할 수 있다. 실패한 이미지들이 특정한 미적 경험, 숭고한 경험을 유발하는 것이다. 

<Symptom XX>은 2020년 팬데믹 사태 때 시도된 이 시리즈로, 실패한 사진 필름에 나타나는 다양한 모양, 표시, 반점을 통합한다. 필름 검사, 결함 있는 부분의 탐색 및 이미지를 확대 등의 방법으로 만들어진, 실패의 사진적 징후는 중요한 것을 상실한 우리의 결핍된 시각의 한 메타포다. 현실의 재현은 이미 중요하지 않다. 결함은 재현을 파괴하고, 환각과 시각적 열병(fever)으로 열린 세계를 전개한다. 위기는, 그 자체에 내재하는 잠재적인 풍부한 속성으로  새로운 에너지원이 될 수 있다. 새로운 시각도 그렇게 허용된다.  오래된 관점이 훼손된 잔해로부터 가능한 것이다. 

Symptom XX 

Could we imagine a flawless vision without deficiencies?  Photographic representations indicate that there is always something invisible, defective and destabilizing in the structure of reality. The visible contains anomaly zones, defined by the presence of imperfections, failures and blind spots. These defective areas of the visible seem to be important for generating a new way of seeing. Although they contaminate representations of the reality, they also create a new image and a new visuality, which were hidden from our eye. Photography helps to explore this new vision in its details and expands everything that was hidden. In this way, failed photography could be inspiring for the invention of other visual infrarealities, originated from the disorder of our environment. Therefore, failed images induce a particular aesthetic experience, the experience of the sublime.   

In 2020 during the sanitary crisis, Symptom XX series unites different figures, marks, spots and shapes that appear on failed photographic films. Its realization consists in the examination of films, the exploration of defective zones and the enlargement of each figure from a macro perspective. As a contamination of visible, the signs of failed photography introduce a symptom of our deficient vision, of a lack of something important. This work is not focused on the flawless representation of reality, but on the non-ideal imaginary visions that appear in the blind spot of photographic perspective. Destructive for realistic representation, they open the universe of hallucination and visual fever.   

Every crisis, beginning with invisible details and microscopic anomalies in the reality, starts to be notable only when it is too late to be repaired. However, the crisis possesses possibility to be a new source of energy. In this sense, failed photography recalls another perception provided with images-symptoms. Even though the old perspective was damaged by the crisis, the new one arrives from its relics.
