역사와 동화는 독자에게 고정된 결론을 수용하게 한다는 점에서 공통점을 지닌다. 배찬효가 모티프로 삼은 역사와 동화에는 약자가 행복하기 위해선 강자의 질서에 따라야 한다는 암묵적인 메시지가 담겨 있다. 서구 모더니티와 남성 우위의 시각성은 이러한 메시지의 토대가 되어 세기를 거치며 '타자'를 향한 규범이 되어 왔다. 반면 배찬효가 여장한 모습으로 존재하는 사진적 서술에서는 서구 모더니티가 '타자'로 정의했던 대상의 정체성이 기묘한 혼종 상태로 재현된다. 동양인 남성은 또 다른 '타자'인 여성의 모습으로 등장하여 마녀가 되기도 하고 역사의 주인공이 되기도 한다. 역사와 동화가 구축해 온 주체성과 타자성의 이미지 사이를 횡단하면서 낯선 혼종적 정체성을 서사 속에 끼워 놓는 것이다. 이러한 서구 모더니티의 시각성을 뒤흔드는 거짓 메시지를 통해 배찬효는 고정된 진실이란 어디에도 없다는 역설적 진실을 시각화한다. 

What history and fairy tales share in common is that they expect readers to accept a fixed conclusion. The historical records and fairy tales that inspired Chanhyo Bae's work to deliver an implicit message that the weak must follow the lead of the strong to have a happy ending. Western modernity and male supremacy shaped this message have become the norm for 'others' last centuries. But in the photographic narrative, Bae is dressed as a woman; what Western modernity has been othering is reproduced as a hybrid with an unclear identity. The Asian man appears as the other person - a woman  and transforms into a witch or a historical figure. The artist brings an unfamiliar, hybrid identity into the narrative while switching back and forth between the subjectivity and otherness that history and fairy tales have established. He visualizes the ironic truth that there is no fixed truth anywhere with a false message that undermines Western modernity's visuality.
