새로운 북극

원주민과 소수의 탐험가만 접근했던 북극은 쉽게 접근할 수 없는 공간이었지만 기후 변화로 인해 매년 최고온도 수치를 갱신하면서 화석 연료와 기타 광물 자원에 대한 탐사가 벌어지는 장소로 변화하고 있다. 20세기까지 산업과 탐사 활동의 증가에도 바다를 뒤엎은 빙하로 인해 쉽게 접근할 수 없었던 북극은 이제 연료, 채굴, 운송, 어업, 관광 등의 이해관계자들이 모여드는 새로운 장소로서 전환되고 있다.   

콜로라도 강 

수백 년 동안 미국 서남부의 젖줄이었던 콜로라도 강은 농업, 공업, 여가 등의 소비로 인해 이제 바다에 도달하기도 전에 고갈된다. 지구 온난화가 야기한 20년 동안의 대가뭄으로 인해 강이 공급할 수 있는 범위를 뛰어넘은 수자원 소비량은 환경의 변화를 체감하게 만들고 있다. 알렉산더 헤일러는 이러한 현실을 기록하면서 천연자원의 잘못된 사용과 관리의 문제점을 보고하고 동시에 사람들이 개선된 방식으로 물을 사용할 수 있는 방법을 제시하고자 한다.  

알렉산더 헤일너는 인간이 자연을 파괴하고, 고갈시키는 과정을 사진으로 기록한다. 그는 북극, 콜로라도 강과 같은 자연 환경을 오랜 시간 동안 촬영하며 그 안에서 벌어지는 극적인 변화를 사진에 담고 있다. 

The New Arctic

The Arctic has been inaccessible to all but a few small groups of indigenous subsistence communities and elite European explorers. However, the climate change has recently resulted in the warmest years on record, while increasing worldwide energy consumption has led to more aggressive searches for fossil fuels and other mineral resources. Stakeholders in energy, extraction, shipping, fishing, development, and tourism are taking advantage of the region's suddenly increasing accessibility.  

Colorado River

The Colorado River, for hundreds of years, the river has been the lifeblood of the American Southwest. However, the river is literally running dry before it reaches the sea because of the increased demands on the river. A twenty-year “Mega drought” induced by global warming, have led to a looming environmental crisis as the entire annual flow of the Colorado River Basin is now over-allocated. Visually mapping the diminishment of the Colorado Heilner proposes to engender smart decisions about water use in the near future. By recording the process of human destroying and exhausting nature, Heilner focuses on the dramatic yet destructive changes that has been occured by economic activity.
