<April Fool 2020> 

악몽과도 같은 팬데믹 사태의 초현실성 속에서 나는 돌연 나의 무력감과 관련된 이미지들에 눈을 뜬다. 그것이 April Fool 2020의 시각적 서사다. 지난 몇 주간, 그 끝을 알 수 없는 끔찍한 영화 속 전혀 비중이 없는 단역으로서 느끼게 되는 공포와 무력함이 온통 나를 지배했다. 우리가 탄 비행기는 동력을 잃었고, 침묵의 자애로움은 앞으로 다가올 것에 대한 전조처럼 느껴진다. 사람들에 의해 텅 빈 슈퍼마켓의 진열대는 모든 것이 영원히 지속할 거라는, 지난 수십 년간의 가정이 실은 화산의 가장자리에서 추는 춤에 지나지 않는다는 사실을 깨닫게 했다. 진실에서 멀어질 수 있는 것은 없으며, 나는 여기에 아무 말도 못 하고 있을 뿐이다. 볼 수 없는 적을 두려워하며, 다른 한편으론 아직 그를 느낄 수 없음을 다행으로 여기며, 공허하게 주변을 서성이며 알 수 없는 것을 기다릴 뿐이다. 카드로 만들어진 집은 무너지고 있고, 우리는 모두 (한 세트의 카드 속) 조커일 뿐이다.

<April Fool 2020> 

The visual narrative of April Fool 2020 gives shape to the emotions and images that paralysed me after we all suddenly woke up in the surreal nightmare of this pandemic. Fear and powerlessness have dominated me for a few weeks now; I feel like an insignificant extra in some morbid film, the conclusion of which is entirely unknown. The plane in which we are all sitting has lost its engines – the benevolent silence is only a harbinger for what is still to come. The supermarket shelves, emptied by hoarders, made me realize that for decades I have assumed that everything would always be there, that our dancing on the volcano’s edge would never end. Nothing could be further from the truth, and here I stand, speechless. Vacantly I walk around, waiting for the utter unknown, afraid of an enemy that I cannot see, and who I fortunately cannot feel yet. The house of cards is collapsing, and we are all the joker.
